Consciously Bottomless----Terza Rima----Sunday Scribblings

Sunday Scribblings prompts us to write about ocean.

As I live in Delhi, ocean is only something to dream about in my day-to-day life. Whenever I get a chance, I prefer to go to the sea rather than mountains. Sea beckons me no end. The vastness, the never ending, the bottomless ocean calls out as nothing does. Ocean conjures up mixed thoughts…too many…sometimes those thoughts are indecipherable….merging into each other…The sea can accept anything. It returns that too. In ways, we do not understand. Sea is unconquerable.

Oceans set us free. Oceans humble us. Oceans consume us. There is a beautiful world in there on the ocean beds. Ocean fascinates me no end. I can watch the waves breaking in to rocks for all eternity. Sea reminds me of eternity.

I write the following, comparing the mind with the sea. Both are so different yet the same. One we can see, other we cannot. Depths of both can never be fathomed in our entire existence.

It might appear a little vague to some. As I wrote it only a while back, I am offering it raw and unedited. Nowadays, I think I am on a editing break!

Consciously Bottomless----Terza Rima

as if eternally etched there, constant is but
moving around, breaking into serrated ed
ges
of the brain, vastness of those thoughts just

about turn around, hitting at the wedges
of time already passed, nonetheless effect
the convoluted shells in the mind’s ledge-

each crevice fills leaving no space. reflects
of the cogitation left behind, still have power
to mar. conquering the mind doesn’t affect

the spirit, as untamed as it can be, towers
over, looking down with disdain at weakness
of consciousness. bottomless psyche showers

more of intellect, energizing the body. bleakness
disappears, like anything dropped into the ocean
is accepted, returned in some other way, uniqueness

retained yet different. slightest of change within,
understanding with wisdom to be calmly serene.

You chose the most perfect words to conjure up the force that is the ocean. I am glad to know that you are touched by the sea.

I was taken into a very interesting ocean/mind experience when reading this work Gautami. Most engaging indeed. Well done.

That poem was really striking...I could see the images approach and recede like the waves.

The ocean;
when you are eagerly heading
towards the horizon,
and when you reach it,
- or you think so,
beyond it is opening a new,
waster horizon.
And there we ought to proceed!

I think its my favourite of your poems. It does flow like the ocean and i like the slight vagueness to it.

Beaman said...

I agree with crafty, the slight vagueness is perfect for a piece about the ocean. Your words and sentences are like waves washing over the reader and then receding, then returning.

'...the convoluted shells in the mind’s ledge...' I love this imagery!

Very nice poem.

thats lovely! incredible imagery!

such a perfect choice of form, and so much in this poem. I loved "the vastness of those thoughts just about turn around" and "the convoluted shells in the mind’s ledge" in particular, as well as the idea of the ocean accepting, returning, and transforming a little each time. i enjoyed this so much.

Gautami, first of all, your command of the English language is quite extraordinary then your poetry is just wonderful. You truly are an inciting and insightful blogger.

I can tell you are a peaceful person just by your attitude about the ocean. What you wrote to preface the 'real' writing was wonderful too.

The sea sounds beautiful! And I love the imagery in your words.
I've never been to the ocean either. I live in Canada, very close to the shores of Lake Erie.
Your writing is lovely.

Your words fit the ocean's power. I also love it, but at the same time the huge powerfulness of it always envokes respect from me, as well. It is so big, so much energy.

gautami,
You've captured the essence of the sea and the mind; work with it don't try to conquer it. Go with the flow, as they say.

Makes me want to go for a walk on the beach (only a lake here but it is a big enough one that I can pretend).

You did a beautiful job bringing the two together. The ocean is all that and more.

It's interesting how the ocean has such a powerful effect on so many - no matter how far away from it we might live.

The ocean is a rich metaphor with many faces, both impersonal/savage, and heart wrenchingly sublime/comforting.

thanks for the encouragement, my scribblings are up!

The sea certainly is a depth of fascination, as you have described. It can be aligned with so much of what is found in life, it appears no one is immune to its wonder nor its drawing power.

You have a way with words.

"Oceans set us free...humble us...consume us..." Absolutely. Both your prose and your poem capture the power, contradiction and complexity of the ocean so well.

Thanks friends, for your continouous support via comments, opinions and encouragements.

Ocean has diffeent effect on different people. But we all agree that the ocean is complex, eternal and fascinating. The same way the mind is. Hence my villanelle.

I love the flow to this, and yes the ocean is one powerful source, just ask any surfer ;)

Wow, Gautami...

What a beautiful poem and I SO agree with you about the lure and magic of the ocean, even more than mountains.

Where I live, we're landlocked in the middle of one of the largest land masses on the planet.

Mountains, too, are thousands of kilometres away. I'm a windswept prairie boy, which partly explains the allure and wonder about the ocean.

You have said this beautifully...in your poem and in your preamble.

:-)

Mmmmm I like it.
This was my favorite bit: like anything dropped into the ocean
is accepted, returned in some other way, uniqueness
I would love to see those lines superimposed on a lovely photo of the sea.

Ah, the ocean, it offers relentless mystery. Like a waking dream, so much lurks beneath the surface.
