Complexity of stillness

in the stillness
there is cacophony
inside my head

I seek company
of strangers on the beach
but seagulls come and sit with me

they peck and pet me
I like the role reversal
of birds caring for me

"if only humans did that"

complexity of simple things

I should have read through the signs
you never wrote a poem for me
you never even read a poem to me

not that I wished for grandiose words
or diamond, platinum or gold
nor did I want hot house flowers

you could have given me music like
few old record of beatles
or dog-eared Physics books

"no one gets the inner thoughts, no one even tries to get it"

complexity of wearing anklets

so I lost an anklet today, silver with tinkling bells
maa, you bought the pair for me when I started to work
it was your gift to me for start of a new innings

I wore the pair everywhere for so long
and one fine day, I took it off for reasons forgotten
no tinkling and life was uncomplicated

when I found those again a few weeks back
my elation knew no bounds and yours was so transparent
I danced around that day, just for that tinkling sound

"maa, you found the lost one under my bed, am I glad my life is hunky dory yet again"

@gautami.tripathy April 19, 2016

complexity of meandering

it will remain nameless, this relationship
which came out of nothing
and will go into oblivion

I simply meandered into it
despite all misgivings and warnings
on that invisible wall

why a simple soul like me
got embroiled with an oafish person
blockheaded to the core?

"there never is a rhyme and reason for such happenings, let me be, let me be"

Doing Three Word Wednesday after a long long time. My muse had all but disappeared. Now it seems to back and I hope to write more.

postcard for maa

so I lost an anklet
maa, it was your gift to me
for start of a new innings

one day, I took it off
for reasons forgotten

"PS: maa, you found the lost one under my bed,
am I glad my life is hunky dory yet again"

complexity of reading old letters

in the bureau, I find some old letters
yellowed, cracked but words still intact
dad, you wrote those to me when I was 15

I had forgotten about those in the gadgetry
of today's lifestyle. However, I had saved the
letters to read again at some point of time

in the deafening silence, I took those out today
and touched the words. Rediscovering your love
is not the highlight. calming me, is what I found.

"money has no meaning when it is not circulated. but what of it, what of it?"

complexity of random musings

I listen to your song and sigh
as I can't reach you any other way
I want the barrier to disappear

I follow the dog to that tree trunk
where he has hidden my memory card
I scrape it out of the ground

my nail breaks and hangs limp
the breeze does nothing to soothe me
I turn back to the song again

"I pick a little stone and rub it on that CD and taste blood"

@gautami.tripathy April 16, 2017

complexity of twisting endings

who cheated me with those salted cashew shaped biscuits
God knows, you won't be forgiven any time soon
I ate those thinking of the real thing

you know, you spoiled my tea time
now I can't look at those without thinking of killing you
I can't even pick up any other savories

who thought of making those biscuits
should be made to stand under the sun
for the whole day, till he browns like the biscuits

"maybe he needs a medal for making us eat less calories,
because we won't be touching those any time soon"

complexity of a meltdown

meltdown. not a good thing to have
however, one can't control it
when the mind refuses to listen

shutdown. maybe one needs it
to regroup, to recoup
to forget to be able to remember

those fun moments of bygones
carefree laughter, and joys unhindered
have to come back, to smile again

"I, who never had an emptied mind, am all for the vacuumed brain"

complexity of dead muse

the muse, they say has a mind of its own
sometimes it flows like water
at other times there is a massive drought

words are there, thoughts are there
but there is no semblance of order
or maybe the mind simply shuts over

phase of hibernation before waking up
to rejuvenate, to renew, to shed the old
for a new beginning with new everything

"only the muse can be brought back from the dead, or should I say undead?"

complexity of hidden emotions

I order Chinese takeaway, spicy and pungent-
my taste buds start to work overtime before it arrives
but I invite few of my friends to share

as I can't bear to be alone with myself
I need the company, the food and a glass of wine
my favourite music playing in the background

I meticulously set the table, as I hate eating with
plastic spoons and forks, direct from the containers
which reminds me of olden days of togetherness

"the spicy foods hides my broken heart with the tears flowing in rivulets"

complexity of following the norms

words are dead, but thoughts are not
although haphazardly placed
and chaotic in such a random way

I feel pulled from all directions
in no state to follow all the norms
or the mundane routine of life

what is normal about longing
for someone who has suffered as
much as you, yet bear it stoically

"the constants will keep changing, I will accept that gracefully"

complexity of panicking

I seek you within my files and folders
between the varied subject matters
from bills to random musings

in the figures and looped numbers
I only see exclusively you
your pain reaches out to me in tentacles

yet you don't understand my concern
the panic mode which I suddenly develop
which churns me to my core

"I have been there before, it isn't the end of the world"

complexity of reaching the destination

I have come a long way
much to long, I would say
yet I arrived finally

to the destination, I wanted to be
it is not a trodden path
yet, I am not scared of the unknown

on the contrary, it thrills me
to discover stuff at my pace
secrets to be unravelled, surprises galore

"whenever we turn towards a corner. we don't know what will hit us"

complexity of sanity

his heart, a mere shell now,
it bleeds slowly to oblivion-
he sheds a single tear

he knows he can handle it
and he will cheer himself up,
and grin for the world

he knows being slack is not an option
and he has to draw a line somewhere-
hence he trims his feelings and smiles

"he can give vent, and undo everything,
but he is held by that invisible strap of decorous behaviour"

complexity of feelings

why so much anger at trivial reasons
why hit out at her, she who cares
when you bang the phone on her

she sheds dry tears
which can't even be wiped

she watches her dreams
shattering to thousands of pieces
each day, every day, to nothingness
is it even worth it to go forward
or should she let it go?

"no easy answers for such a question, sometimes even love can't hold together"

@gautami.tripathy April 08, 2017
complexity of being a man

that bottled water never tasted better
parched throat relished it
although the water was slightly warm

dust and grime coated him fully
his oil stained overall was no longer white
but he touched his car lovingly

his dogs seating on the cobbled path
watched him with half open eyes
is that a smirk, I see on their faces?

"a man has his dogs and his car, yet he needs soft touch of woman"

@gautami.tripathy April 07, 2017
complexity of words

the musty air surrounds the words
those words which don't come out
and hide within the recesses of the mind

a full blown novel can be written
on the paper, but the words refuse to pour forth
yet swirl all over the place in a jumble

silence holds the fort with fortitude
albeit an enforced one, with no inkling of
how to end the farce

"why then we waste words when silence is what is needed?"

@gautami.tripathy April 06, 2017

complexity of space

the space is riddled with holes
and the cement simply slithers down
maybe the space needs the air

musty, warm and full of secrets
in that half asleep, half awake state
it speculates the uncertainty

the only constant in our life
the needy air for the space
and the needy space for the air

"why do we even think of space, when all we desire is the intertwining?"

@gautami.tripathy April 05, 2017

complexity of loving

the trapped air inside the castle
seeks ways to move out
but the windows are nailed and doors are padlocked

the air settles down accepting its fate
of loneliness and staleness, the anger
having dissipated long ago

the mountains far away are invisible
through the dust laden windows
yet are so beckoning to the musty air

when after aeons, thunder strikes the castle
breaking glasses, the air escapes,
embracing the rains as an elemental lover

"the earth taught us passion by its naked display of it, towards the sun"
