Benazir Bhutto assassinated.......

She was assassinated after she had addressed a rally. A suicide bomber went off. In that chaos, she was shot at point blank range. At least 20 others died in that bombing. She was declared dead at 6:16 pm.

She was the first woman to lead a Muslim state. She was elected twice to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

It is indeed a sad day for Pakistan. To some extent, India too..

There is utter chaos now in the streets of Pakistan. Many of her fans have committed suicide after her death.

##Update: There has been disturbances in some parts of India. It was expected. India is much affected by what happens in Pakistan.

It created a big void in the Pakistan politics. India is going to be affected. I am indeed very sad as are most Indians.

I was mortified..I was foolish enough to believe that Musharif would provide adequate security.
The fact that many cities in the northern regions of Pakistan, like Quetta, are a safe haven for the Taliban and al qaeda is one of the great mysteries of the so called war on terror.

The general population is held ransom by a domestic war of terror from these groups. They are caught between the Western Forces and these militant Islamists. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Musharif has certainly been playing a dangerous game trying to appease both combatants. On the one hand he tells the West that he is a stalwart supporter of their cause and yet he cannot seem to make any headway despite billions of dollars in aid. Many say that the troops would rather be involved in the complete annexation of Kashmir and resuming their war with India.

This is certainly a turning point in this War. The people must choose freedom and stand up to the thugs who blow up schools and intend on strengthening their insufferable methods of reinstating their vision of securing an archaic, misogynistic, archeo-tribalistic, nation with nuclear weapons at their disposal to bully the rest of Asia and the world.

This is a terrible day. Millions of innocent people are going to pay with their lives because of these terrorists...the entire country is now teetering on the brink of disaster.

This may be the beginning or the end...I think that it is a 50/50 proposition at best. Sometimes it easy to throw your hands up in the air and say to hell with them..but when I see the images of all of those children....

That is so terribly sad. My heart goes out to her children. Although it's likely that they will go into politics as well, and one has to hope they do not suffer the same fate.

OMG! I didn't know. So out of the loop with news over the holidays. This is so sad....and unacceptable!! I fear the repercussions.

Michele spun me over this way. I guess she knew I needed to be informed.

Hello Michele sent me to say that is so sad. Why do people have to kill other people? I have never understood that rage! Such sadness for a country...from what I understand she was a wonderful leader...

My heart is heavy with news of this latest tragedy. When will the world learn that violence begets violence and solves nothing? My prayers for peace continue in these troubled times and I believe there have to be ways for people of differing beliefs to remain independent yet live together without killing one another.
Hugs and blessings,

It is so sad to know that she is gone. I hope her memory lives on in everyone's heart. She is a martyr, and she should still be alive to lead the world, in peace. Michele sent me tonight.

Chaos is the word that has been used to describe the situation in Pakistan through the U.S. press. As scary a scenario as chaos and loose nukes are for the U.S., it has to be terrifying for you in India.

This is such a senseless, tragic event with all fingers pointed toward direct involved from the Musharraf regime.

My thoughts are with you and everyone in your country.

it is so sad, that men murder those whom they can not defeat in debate, or in elections.
Praying for Pakistan ( and India)

It is indeed a sad day for the world: I can't help but wonder what would have happened had she been able to lead her country into the light.

Now we'll never know.

Michele sends her wishes for peace around the globe. There's too much hatred on the planet, and it has to stop.

Yes, Gautami, this is all we're seeing on the news over here, the state of chaos there.

I think the best we can hope for now is that all of the chaos is held within Pakistan's borders...

...And that its fallout doesn't affect India too badly. This is bad, ominous news.
